Konkursi Ndёrkombёtar Onufri “Mё shumё njёsoj”

Perkthimi nga Anglishtja: Ardita M. Gjeçi

Tiranё. Edicioni i 17-tё i “Onufrit”, quajtur “I Am Art(ist)” (Une jam Art(ist)) po zhvillohet nё Galerinё Kombёtare Tё Arteve tё Tiranёs, dhe pёrngjan shumё me edicionet e kaluara. Aq shumё pёrngjan, saqё gjashtё nga artistёt e ekspozitёs tё vitit tё kaluar janё pjesёmarrёs edhe kёtё vit.

Shumё vizitorё tё ekspozitёs komentuan qё s’kishte asgjё tё jashtёzakonshme, dhe asgjё veçanёrisht tё re rreth ekspozitave tё fundit tё “Onufrit”.
Njё shpjegim pёr kёtё mund tё jetё qё,duke filluar nga vitit 2007, 14 artistё tё caktuar kanё marrё pjesё nё njё kombinim prej 38 herёsh, me katёr prej tyre, tё cilet, kanё marrё pjesё tre herё secili, nё katёr vitet e fundit. Tё paktёn gjashtё nga artistёt e vendosur nё Tiranё, tё kёtij edicioni, kanё marrё pjesё edhe nё atё tё vitit tё kaluar, dhe tё tjerё kanё qёnё pjesёmarrёs nё edicionet e mёparshme tё Onufrit.

Njё shpjegim i dytё mund tё jete qё nё nёntё vitet e shkuar, “Onufri” ёshtё kuruar nga dy herё nga dy persona tё njёjtё. Pёr mё tepёr, pjesёmarrёs tё tjerё dhe fitues kanё qёnё gjithashtu pjestarё tё jurisё, kuratore dhe pjestarё tё stafit tё Galerisё Kombёtare tё Arteve. Njё bashkim inçestual, i cili, me kalimin e kohёs, ёshtё kthyer nё marrёveshjen e “Vetme Shqiptare” tё Artit . Qё nga 2008, vetёm njё artist jo shqiptar ёshtё pёrzgjedhur tё marrё pjesё nё konkurs, edhe pse i quajtur konkurs “Internacional”, shqiptarёt kanё fituar cmimin e madh çdo vit qё nga 2003-i.
“Sipas kuratores sё Onufrit 2010 Suzana Varvarica Kuka: ” Kjo ekspozitё pёrpiqet tё shfaqё punё tё cilat ilustrojnё veprimet koshiente dhe subkoshiente tё artistit pёrgjatё proçesit tё formimit dhe ekzekutimit tё punёs. Puna e Onufrit 2010 tregon, nёpёrmjet pamjeve, disa prej temave tё pёrmendura nё konceptin kuratorial dhe disa prej karakteristikave tё fiziogonomisё tё artit dhe problematikat e jetёs Shqiptare. Gjithashtu, nё Onufer 2010, do tё bёhemi tё vetёdijshёm pёr drejtimin qё kanё marrё zhvillimi dhe identiteti i artistёve tё rinj shqiptarё.” (shkёputur nga faqja e internetit e Galerisё Kombёtare). Dhe cmimi i parё i shkon Gazmend Lekes, njё profesor i Akademisё sё Arteve, pёrafёrsisht 59 vjeç.

Kuratorja nё kёtё rast kishte bёrё disa deklarata tё cilat nuk pёrputhen me pёrzgjedhjen edhe rezultatin e konkursit, duke bёrё tё mundur dyshimin mbi vlerёn reale tё çmimit.
Mbulimi
Deri mё tani, burimi mё i gjёrё i arritshme pёrrёth Cmimit Internacional Onufri gjendet nё CV-tё individuale online tё artistёve. Kjo e vёshtirёson tej mase gjetjen e informacioneve tё rёndёsishme duke tё tё marrё shumё kohё.Ka informacione te tjera tё disponueshme, por te shpёrndara dhe te paplota ose kontradiktore, dhe nuk ka faqe interneti funksionale.
Nё Youtube.com, ka vetem 3 klipe pёr sa i pёrket Konkursit Internacional “Onufri”, tё gjitha prej edicionit tё vitit 2009, dhe deri me 10 Dhjetor, 2010, kanё njё shikueshmёri totale mё pak se 600 shikime.
Kёrkimi nё internet, nё Google, me “Cmimi Onufri” tregon 11,200 rezultate, ndersa po te kerkohet vetem artisti Heldi Pema jep 29,300 rezultate. Njё kёrkim me “Onufri Internazional Prize” shfaq vetёm 787 rezultate, ose 1/3 e rezultateve qё tregon njё kёrkim rreth “Ali Kali Divjakё”, njё restorant peshku ne Divjakё”.

Ndoshta vendi mё i mirё pёr gjetjen e informacioneve mbi konkursin “Onufri” ёshtё nё faqet e Facebook-ut tё artistёve pjesёmarrёs.
Kjo pёrmbledhje informacioni deri mё sot ёshtё i vetmi burim online i kuptueshёm pёr sa i pёrket Cmimit Internacional Onufri.
Menaxhimi (Kuratorёt, juria, artistet, çmimet)
“Onufri”, filloi si ekspozitё nё Nёntor tё vitit 1993, ku çdokush mund tё ekspozonte punёt e tyre. Nё kohё, u kthye nё njё konkurs. Njё komitet u emёrua pёr dhёnien e çmimeve, dhe nё 1998, prej njё vendimi tё Kёshillit tё Ministrave, eventi u ngrit nё njё Konkurs Vjetor Internacional. Kuratorёt zgjidheshin pёr selektimin e pjesёmarrёsve dhe juria u krijua pёr tё dhёnё çmimet. Konkursi ёshtё i organizuar nga Galeria Kombёtare e Arteve dhe financohet nga Ministria e Turizmit, Kulturёs, Rinisё dhe Sporteve dhe “sponsor tё tjerё”.
Cdo vit, njё kurator pёrzgjidhet pёr organizimin e konkursit Onufri. Pёrgjatё 9 viteve tё fundit, Onufri ёshtё kuruar 2 herё nga drejtori i Galerisё Rubens Shima dhe dy herё nga pjestarja e stafit, Zana Varvarica.

Gjithёsesi, prej 2008, ka patur vetёm njё pjesёmarrёs internacional, ndersa dy edicionet e fundit tё Onufrit kanë qënë ekskluzive pёr shqiptarёt. Onufri ka parё shumё artistё tё cilёt i janё rikthyer konkurimit dhe fitues çmimesh qё kanё kuruar ekspoziten apo shёrbyer nё juri. Tё tjerё artistё kanё qёne ish-kuratorё tё Galerisё Kombёtare tё Arteve, gjithashtu edhe pjestarё dhe ish-pjestarё tё stafit tё saj.

Gjithashtu nё 2007, disa pjesёmarrёs tё Onufrit u pёrzgjodhen pёr nё Bienale tё Venecies.
Nё njё letёr, nё 2008, pёr Ministrin e atёhershёm tё Kulturёs Ylli Pango, fituesi i Onufrit 2007, Fani Zguro shkruan: “Kanё kaluar tre muaj qё nga dhёnia e çmimeve nё Onufer, siç u vendosen nga njё juri internacionale” dhe ai s’kishte marrё akoma asgjё. Ai shkruan qё kjo vonesё “i ka kushtuar atij aktivitete jashtё vendit, dhe rrezik pёr humbjen e ekspozitave nё pritje”. Ai vazhdon tё thotё se fituesi i mёparshёm i Onufrit ka pritur njё vit tё tёrё para sё tё merrte çmimin.

—-English version—-

TIRANA.  The 17th edition of “Onufri”, entitled “I Am Art(ist)”  is now taking place at the National Art Gallery in Tirana, and it is much like the previous ones.  So much indeed, that at least six of the Tirana based artists from last year’s exhibition are back this year.

Many visitors to the exhibition have commented that there is nothing exceptional, and particularly nothing new about the recent “Onufri” exhibitions.

One explanation for this could be that since 2007, a certain 14 artists have participated a combined 38 times, with four of the 14 artists having participated three times each in the last four years.  At least six of the Tirana based artists in this year’s competition participated in last year’s competition, and others still have participated in previous “Onufri” competitions.*

A second explanation could be that over the past nine competitions, “Onufri” has been curated twice each by the same two people. Furthermore, other former participants and winners have also been jury members, curators and staff members at the National Art Gallery. A rather incestuous gathering, which over the last years has become an “Albanian Only” affair.  Since 2008, only one non-Albanian artist has been selected to participate, and despite being labelled  an “International” competition, Albanians have won the top prize every year since 2003.

“According to the Onufri 2010 curator Suzana Varvarica Kuka: “This exhibition endeavours to display works that illustrate the conscious and subconscious actions of the artist during the process of formation and execution of the work. The works of Onufri 2010 demonstrate through images some of the themes mentioned in the curatorial concept and some of the features of the physiognomy of art and problematic Albanian life. Also in Onufri 2010 we will become aware of the direction the development and identity of young Albanian artists takes.”  (excerpt from the National Gallery’s new website).  And the first prize goes to Gazmend Leka, an Arts Academy professor, close to 59 years old.

The curator in this case has made certain statements that do not match with the selection and outcome of competition, thus making it possible to doubt the real value of the prizes.

Coverage

By far, the largest source of accessible information regarding the International Onufri Prize is found on individual artist’s CVs posted online.  This makes the task of finding relevant information very difficult and time consuming.  Other information is available, but scattered and incomplete or contradictory, and there is no functional website.

On Youtube.com, there are only 3 clips relating to the Onufri International competition, all of which are from the 2009 edition, and as of December 10, 2010, have a total of less than 600 views combined.

An internet search on Google for “Cmimi Onufri” shows 11,200 results, in contrast to a search for artist Heldi Pema which returns 29,300 results.  A search for “Onufri International Prize” yields only 787 results, or 1/3 of the results that a search brings for “Ali Kali Divjak”, a fish restaurant in Divjak.

Perhaps the best place to find information on the “Onufri” competition is on the participating artists’ Facebook pages.

This collection of information is currently by far the most comprehensive single online source regarding the International Onufri Prize, which is unfortunate.

Management (Curator, jury, artists, prizes)

“Onufri”, began as an exhibition in November of 1993, where everybody could exhibit their work. Over time, it developed into a contest. A committee was nominated to award prizes and in 1998 by decision of the Council of Ministers, the event was elevated into an Annual International Contest. Curators were chosen to select participants and a jury was instituted to award prizes.  The competition is organized by the National Art Gallery and is funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports and “other sponsors”.

Each year, a curator is selected to organize the Onufri competition. Over the past nine competitions, Onufri has been curated twice by Gallery Director Rubens Shima and twice by staff member Zana Varvarica.  Past curators have also come from Kosovo and Italy.

In general, the curator’s duty is to serve the artists, but they should also serve the public at large and must remain open and aware of both.  By this, we mean not only selecting artworks and how they are presented, but also provide meaningful and accessible information for the public through catalogues and supporting material, which has rarely been done sufficiently in the past – as evidenced from the lack of information available on previous competitions.

Imagine that in 2010, there is still no permanent website for Onufri! (This last fact is actually not surprising…Wikipedia.com still lists Genc Mulliqi as Director of the National Gallery, and he was let go in 2008!)

A jury is also appointed.  The duty of the jury is to select the prize winners.  Typically, the jury must ensure fairness, honesty, and no politically motivated decisions and the prize should be based on the combined opinion of the jury. Often, there is a pre-set list of criteria, and is often based on a scale of 0-5. In this way, the jury need not function as a group, but simply award the prize based on the combined result of the jury’s measured opinions.  Another form of jury is to discuss the artworks at length until a majority consensus is reached.  We do not yet know the process of the Onufri jury.

Since 1998, Onufri has been an international competition. Since 2008, however, there has only been one international participant, with the last two Onufri prizes being exclusively for Albanians.  Onufri has seen many artists return to compete and has seen prize winners go on to curate the exhibition and serve on the jury.  Other artists have been former curators for the National Art Gallery, as well as former and current staff members.

Probably the most interesting aspect, for both artists and the public, is the awarding of prizes.  Onufri typically consists of a first, second and third prize.  Often, there is also a ‘special prize’ or ‘jury prize’ and from what we can gather, there was once an Onufri prize for sculpture.  It is not clear what is the value of the prize, but there was reference that in 2007 the special prize was a trip to Milan and the possibility of an exhibition.  Also in 2007, several Onufri participants were selected to participate in the Venice Biennale.

In a 2008 letter to then Minister of Culture Ylli Pango, “Onufri 2007” winner Fani Zguro wrote: “It is now three full months since the awarding of prizes at “Onufri”, as decided by an international jury” and he has still not recieved anything.  He writes that this delay has “cost him activities abroad, and risks missing unpcoming exhibitions”.  He continues to say that the previous “Onufri” prize winner had waited a full year before recieving the prize.
